Solids in Suspension (Turbidity)
Posted by poolguru in Pool Water on May 9, 2009
Turbidity is a very important topic as it is the main thing a swimming pool filter is used for.
These particles in your pool or spa are virtually impossible to eliminate entirely, mainly because the pool is being continually contaminated by bathers, who bring in the particles.
So the best we can hope for is continual dillution of these particles by the filter.
This is a quick topic as this term will be used in the rest of this filtration series of blogs.
The water in your pool
Posted by poolguru in Pool Water on May 9, 2009
The water in your pool
in its purest form, it’s odorless,
nearly colorless and tasteless. It’s in your body, the food you eat and the beverages you drink. You use it to clean yourself, your clothes, your dishes, your car and everything else around you. You can travel on it or jump in it to cool off on hot summer days. Many of the products that you use every day contain it or were manufactured using it. All forms of life need it, and if they don’t get enough of it, they die.
As we are talking about swimming pool water, the 2 most important terms to think of in relation to our water is “Hard” or “Soft”. These 2 terms are very geographical in your country, it depends really on were your water is gathered and then supllied to you.
I will endeavour to explain these terms. These terms are derived by how the Natural water Cycle works. Read the rest of this entry »
Filtration
Posted by poolguru in Pool Water on May 9, 2009
I will have to do this as a series of posts, as this is a huge subject.
I will try to keep to the topic, but on occasion i will stray off topic to enable me to explain things. We will start with the subject of Water and then work our way through the whole process until we have a good idea of how pure and filtrated water arrives in your Swimming Pool or Spa.
Any comments are very welcome and if you wish to add any information then just let me know.
A little info about pH and levels
Posted by poolguru in Pool Water on May 5, 2009
The pH level indicates how acidic or alkaline the water is at any given time. A pH level of 7 means that water is neutral; above 7 means the water is alkaline, while below 7 indicates acid.
The pH of the water must be maintained be between 7.2 and 7.8 the ideal being between 7.4 and 7.6. This is necessary to allow the chlorine to work effectively.
Incorrect pH levels can give any or all of the following results:
pH BELOW 7.2
- causes Eye irritation.
- Strong odours
- Corrosion.
- Cloudy water.
pH ABOVE 7.6
- causes Eye irritation.
- Cloudy water
- Permits rapid growth of algae
- Reduced effectiveness of the chlorine
- Scale and calcium deposits
I will a much more detailed post on this very important subject, please check back
What is TDS ( total dissolved solids)
Posted by poolguru in Pool Water on May 5, 2009
TDS be defined as a measure of the total amount of dissolved matter in water, e.g. calcium, magnesium, carbonates, bicarbonates, metallic compounds, etc.
Possible problems associated with high TDS….
- Hazy water, fixture corrosion, and scale build-up
- Fixture corrosion
- Scale build-up
Really the only solution to this problem is by dilution. Be very careful not to drain your pool, partial draining should be affective, maybe 1/3 to start with.
Complete emtying of a swimming pool is not always a good thing, especially if it is a Liner Pool, unless you have the knowledge…. remember, pool liners are not magically stuck to your pool walls – you empty the water and the liner will come lose.
Probably the best advice to consult a local pool professional.
